European cars are loaded with electronics. From heated seats to complex engine control modules, these systems put a heavy demand on your battery. In cold weather, your battery’s capacity can drop by as much as 30–50%. If it’s already weak, it may not start your car on a freezing morning. Cold weather also thickens motor oil, making the engine harder to turn over, which adds even more strain to the battery.
What to do: Have your battery tested before winter sets in. We’ll check the charge, condition, and cranking amps to make sure you won’t get stranded when you need your car most. If your battery is over three years old, it’s a smart move to have it inspected and possibly replaced as part of your winter prep.
Cold air reduces tire pressure. For every 10°F drop in temperature, tires can lose 1–2 PSI. Low tire pressure affects traction, fuel economy, and handling—especially critical for performance vehicles. Uneven wear or underinflation can also reduce the lifespan of your tires.
What to do: Check your tire pressure weekly in the winter. Set them to manufacturer specs (not the number on the tire sidewall). If your vehicle has TPMS warnings, don’t ignore them—come in and let us recalibrate or inspect the system. Consider switching to winter tires if you frequently travel on icy or snow-packed roads. They offer better grip and control in cold conditions.
Oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid all get thicker in the cold. For European engines, which run tighter tolerances and rely on synthetic fluids, this can cause delayed response or even damage if the wrong fluids are used. Cold fluids also flow more slowly, putting additional strain on your vehicle during startup and short trips.
What to do: Make sure your fluids are winter-ready. We use the correct spec oils and coolants for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and more, matched to both manufacturer and climate. If your vehicle hasn’t had a fluid flush in the last couple of years, winter is a great time to schedule it.
European vehicles use more sensors than most domestic models. These include air suspension systems, tire pressure monitors, adaptive cruise control, and dynamic stability control. Cold and moisture can cause sensors to misread or fail—leading to confusing warning lights or intermittent issues.

Starting your car in freezing temperatures creates additional stress on engine components. Cold oil takes longer to circulate, and metal contracts, which increases friction. For turbocharged engines or those with start-stop systems, this stress can cause wear over time.
What to do: Let your car idle for 30–60 seconds after a cold start before driving off. This allows oil to circulate and systems to stabilize. Make sure your oil is clean and the correct viscosity for winter use. Avoid long periods of idling, though, as that can waste fuel and produce excess carbon buildup.
